Autumn Equals Comfort Food

ThanksgivingWhen fall leaves start to fall and a chill is in the air, it’s time to start firing up the oven and cooking comfort food. But let’s face it; fall is a busy time. School and sports are in full swing. Free time to experiment in the kitchen can be difficult to come by. So what can you do to satisfy your craving for delicious comfort food?

The definition of comfort food is traditionally eaten food (which often provides a nostalgic or sentimental feeling to the person eating it) or simply provides the consumer an easy-to-digest meal, soft in consistency, and rich in calories, nutrients, or both. The nostalgic element of most comfort food may be specific to either the individual or a specific culture. That’s a pretty clinical definition. We prefer to explain it as the delicious food we would probably opt to eat all of the time if calories, fat and carbohydrates didn’t matter.

If you love comfort food and live in or are traveling to the Inland Empire in Southern California, head up to the San Bernardino Mountains to Lake Arrowhead Village, where Belgian Waffle Works has been serving up delicious comfort food dockside since 1982. And even if your family and friends include vegetarians, gluten-free dieters or Paleo-people, we’ve got a little something for everyone, including those who prefer healthy dining options.

But today, let’s focus on the ooey, gooey, rich and creamy and crispy food that we crave. And while it could make your jeans a tad tighter if you make it a mainstay, that’s what sweatpants are for! Anyway, we aren’t recommending that you feast exclusively on comfort foods. But there is nothing wrong with enjoying them on occasion. What’s your favorite comfort food?
